Most of us eat between meals, for some it is a regime to lose weight and for some just a way to curb hunger. In fact having small frequent meals is a healthier than having three large meals in a day.  A quick healthy snack between the meals is ideal to gear up your metabolism and manage weight.

There are many benefits of snacking, aiding weight loss being one, followed by improving concentration, managing mood swings providing energy and fighting to fatigue. However these benefits fail when food is used as a comfort or reward rather than to satisfy hunger.  Emotional eating is using food as a reward or a stress buster and in such cases emotional eaters are generally powerless over their food cravings. The first instinct in such cases is to grab a chocolate or binge on cookies.  One rarely chooses quick healthy snacks when captive to such longings.

Emotional hunger can’t be filled with food. Eating may feel good at that  moment, but the feelings that sparked the eating are not resolved. To aggravate the situation one ends up feeling guilty for giving in to one’s desires and banking up extra calories. In  order to stop emotional eating, you have to find other ways to fulfill yourself emotionally.

  • If you’re anxious divert your by dancing to your favorite song, go for  a brisk walk or  ride  a cycle
  • If you’re bored, read a good book, watch your favorite show or develop a new hobby like playing guitar, painting.

Quick healthy snacks like fruits, whole grain cereals, a light salad, nuts, yogurts, oats or a granola bar  can make your snack time fun time without any guilt and remorse. It’s normal and natural to eat occasionally to celebrate or to lighten up your mood but only if one takes care to be conscious about ones choices. Selecting healthy wholesome foods as snacks is all the trick needed.
